Historic pubs in Birmingham

The "Figure of Eight - JD Wetherspoon" in Birmingham, England, is a typical representative of the well-known British pub chain JD Wetherspoon, which is appreciated for its affordable food and drinks as well as its unique, often historic locations. This pub is located in the heart of the city and is shaped by the vibrant atmosphere of its surroundings, which are interspersed with canals and modern architecture. The name "Figure of Eight" refers to Birmingham's historic canal system, which traversed the land in an eight-shaped loop during the 18th and early 19th centuries – a reference that connects the pub to local history. It is a popular meeting point for a diverse mix of patrons, including locals, tourists, and business travelers looking for a casual meal or a cold beer.

Wetherspoon pub with beer garden

The interior of the "Figure of Eight" is spacious and open, a feature of many older Wetherspoon locations. The decor is functional yet appealing, with dark wooden furniture, carpets, and decorations that reflect local history and culture – such as pictures and texts on the walls telling the stories of prominent figures like Thomas Attwood or Joseph Chamberlain, who shaped Birmingham. There is a beer garden that is a highlight on warmer days, providing guests with the opportunity to relax outdoors. The atmosphere is lively, especially in the evenings or on weekends when the pub is often busy, giving it a sociable yet sometimes loud character.

Best fish and chips Birmingham

Culinary-wise, the "Figure of Eight" offers classic Wetherspoon fare, combining British pub dishes with a focus on generosity and flavor. A highlight is the fish and chips, featuring crispy battered fish served with golden fries – a dish renowned for its freshness and quality. The full English breakfast is also very popular, with juicy sausages, crispy bacon, a perfectly fried egg, and grilled tomatoes serving as a traditional morning start. Beer lovers will find a wide selection of real ales, including local varieties like Titanic White Star, which impresses with its malty profile and gentle bitterness. The menu is complemented by seasonal offerings, particularly during the regularly held beer festivals where guests can try new and unusual types.

Relaxed pub visit in Birmingham

The service follows the tried-and-tested Wetherspoon principle: guests order at the bar, and the food is then brought to their table. The staff is friendly and efficient, although there can be short waiting times during peak hours – a sign of the establishment's popularity. For added convenience, there is an app that allows guests to order directly from their tables, making the visit even more relaxed. The bar offers not only beers but also a solid selection of spirits and wines, with the option for many guests to "double up" on certain drinks being particularly appreciated.

We have been many times, and it is always good. What's not to like about a 'Spoons' including the price.

Avoid This Place – Rude and Discriminatory Staff I visited JD Wetherspoon with a friend, expecting a good time, but the experience was ruined by the unprofessional and outright rude behavior of both the bouncer and the manager. What made it worse was the clear discrimination we faced, which is completely unacceptable. A business should treat all customers with respect, but this place failed terribly. If you’re looking for a welcoming and inclusive environment, I strongly recommend going elsewhere. No one should have to deal with this kind of treatment. Hope this will reach to right person.

One of the worst meal ever had in wetherspoons. 4 of us ate, what a mistake. It's too busy, staff can't be bothered. The worst was a vegetarian chilli on a jacket, small, so child's portion. Stone cold potato with a chilli that looked like it had been there for days. A chicken burger with tough over done chicken breast and a double beefburger, dry enough to need a mouth of water with each bite. We didn't have long as we were going to the arena, so we ate what we could, told the staff and they could not be bothered, in fact the reason they have for the cold jacket potato with chilli was it's like that cos it's a child's portion, no way would any of us serve it to a child or even a dog, disgusting.

Usual spoons . This time my steak was quite chewy and overdone but not bad. Mediterranean salad that came with it was good too.
